As a result of HIV/AIDS and poverty there are more than 1.9 million abandoned or orphaned children in South Africa and Zimbabwe, these vulnerable children sleep on dirt or linoleum floors, without sheets or blankets.
KasCare is a not-for-profit association who are seeking to raise awareness of these children's plight and bring comfort and hope to such homeless children through the provision of lovingly hand-knitted blankets via their knit-a-square program.
Over 3,000 people from 35 countries around the world, have already lovingly knit or crocheted 8”/20cm squares and sent them to South Africa where they are joined into hand-made blankets and distributed to these children.
For 2011/12 KasCare are taking their project one step further with ‘Knit-a-squillion challenge’, which aims to provide warmth for 36,000 children. The goal is to send 1,2 million squares to South Africa by July 10, 2012.
How to help:
- Knit or crochet 8”/20 cm squares, in any pattern you like, and in any yarn, as long as your squares are warm and cosy. (It does not matter if they are not exactly 8” /20cm squares.)
- As part of your contribution please post your squares to:
